Coupon Basics: Coupon Values and When to Use Your Coupons

Understanding Coupon Values and When to Use Your Coupons is the key to couponing success.  Just because you have a coupon does not mean that you need to use it as soon as you clip it. Patience can be your friend!
I am going to explain how to get maximum value for your coupons below.

Coupon Values:
    • Single Item Coupons are good off 1 Item. These are typically listed as $1 off 1 or $1/1. That means that you will save $1 when you purchase one of the items listed on the coupon.
    • Multiple Product Discounts are listed as $1/2 or $2 off 3, and so on. These require you to purchase multiple items in order to use your coupon. So if a coupon says $2 off the purchase of 3 then you need to buy 3 before you can use the coupon. You cannot get partial value for these coupons.
    • Buy 1 Get 1 Free Coupons are sometimes noted as B1G1 or BOGO (Buy One Get One). These require you to purchase one item and the second one is free. These are perfect for combining with Buy 1 Get 1 Free Sales in your local grocery stores.
    • Free Product Coupons are typically issued directly from the manufacturer and typically do not require any other purchase. You will find that you can sign up for Free Product Coupons on Facebook and Company Websites.
When to use your Coupons:
One of the first things you start to realize when using coupons is that one of the most important aspects of saving money with coupons is WHEN you use your coupons. Using coupons is all about when and where you use your coupons as much as it is about the value of the actual coupons. Here are a few factors to keep in mind:
    • Timing - Saving with Coupons is all about knowing when to use your coupons. Watch for Store Promotions, Store Coupons, or Loss Leader Sales. These tend to be great times to spend those coupons. Think of it as doubling your savings if you can use a coupon at the same time as you find an item on sale.
    • Location - Some coupons are better spent at one store over another. Double coupons are a great example. A $0.50 coupon that doubles may be worth more at one store than at a store that doesn’t double coupons.
    • Value - Start paying attention to prices. Just because you have a coupon doesn’t mean an item is going to be a great deal. Also companies release different value coupons for the same items so a $0.50 coupon might not be that great if you know that a company typically releases $1 coupons for the same product.
Things to Watch Out For:
    • Store B1G1 Sales-  This is the best way to save money using coupons.  This is the first thing that I look for when I look through the weekly ads and Southern Savers website.  If there is a B1G1 sale, think of each item as being half price.  And then use your coupon on the half price item and you have BIG savings!
    • Competitor Coupons- The Publix that I shop at reguarly considers Target and Foodlion a competitor, and these two stores always have printable coupons.  I always try to find items that I can stack a competitor coupon and a manufacturer coupon together.
    • Drug Store Rewards- I am going to admit that this is the one area that I am still trying to master.  Most of the Drug Stores have some form of Reward Card, and when you use the reward card for certain items you get "cash" back to use towards your next purchase.  The Cash is printed at the bottom of your receipt and you use it like a store credit.
All three of these factors will contribute to your overall couponing success.

Wonderful Weekend Wishes

I have an incredibly busy weekend!  Work, concert, Birthday party, and the usual cooking, cleaning, shopping... It makes me tired just thinking about it all.

I am very excited to get a night out on the town to see one of my husband's favorite bands, but please keep me in your thoughts... Conner is going to spend the night away from me for the first time! GASP!!!  I know he will be in great hands with his Grammy, but I feel so guilty.

Anywho, these are my wonderful weekend wishes...

To someday have an office that looks like this...

To find some healthy dinners that look as yummy as this...

To be bold enough to wear some leg warmers like this...

To find some beautiful cake stands like this...

And to someday go back to New Orleans to indulge in this again...

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.  What are you up to this weekend?  Any big plans? Any coupon shopping trips in store?

How to Lose Weight?

This is a big question that I have been struggling with for as long as I can remember.  It should be easy... you burn more calories than you consume, right?!  I wish it was that simple.  I wish that I didn't have a love affair with food. I wish that I didn't have to exercise.  I wish, I wish, I wish...

I have finally decided that I need to shed the extra baby weight that I have been hanging on to for the past 7 months.  I have no more excuses, I AM going to lose weight!

One of my good friends has a blog The Skinny on Sitting Pretty, and she is journaling her weight loss journey.  I think that this is very brave.  Weight is such a sensitive subject for most of us women and it is very difficult to let the world know how much you weigh and your daily struggles with it.  So kuddos to her for taking a big leap and sharing all the details!

With that being said, I have decided to use this blog to help keep me accountable.  I am going to post my struggles and triumphs, but I am not going to be as bold and post my weight... my husband does read this blog  ;)

I would love to hear from you... what has worked for you? what hasn't worked? any tips or ideas for a busy momma?

Snow Day

Wouldn't you just love waking up to this smiling face... I do!  I absolutely adore being a mommy, especially to this sweetie pie.  Today's post is going to be short and sweet.

I have enjoyed this snow day more than any others... I have gotten to spend it with my littleman.  We did not go out in the snow today, but we did take a good hour and a half nap together.  It was divine!

Normally, I use Conner's nap time as catch-up time... cleaning, cooking, laundry, etc.  But today I cuddled up in the bed with him and we slept. Besides having a good cuddle buddy, it was really nice to actually take a nap.  It has been a really long time since I have taken one, but I am going to try to take more with him.  I felt so refreshed and had lots of energy, which I definitely needed because Conner was ready to play when he woke up!

I hope all of you have had a great snow day too!  Until next time...

Coupon Basics: Types of Coupons and Where to Find Them

I have had a lot of questions about coupons, so I decided that I would try to start a series.  A basic 101 of coupons.  I am going to start this series explaining the types of coupons and where to find them.
There are 2 Main Types of Coupons:
Manufacturer Coupons are issued by the Manufacturer to help increase the sales of specific products. When you use a Manufacturer Coupon at your local store you get the Face Value of the Coupon deducted from your total at checkout. The store then sends in these coupons to the Manufacturer and “Redeems” them for the Face Value of the Coupon plus a small handling fee.
Store Coupons are specific to one retailer. The most common Store Coupons that I mention are for Publix, Walgreens and Target.
  • Store Coupons can typically be stacked with manufacturer coupons. Stores like Publix, Target and Walgreens allow you to use 1 Manufacturer Coupon and 1 Target/ Publix/ Wagreens Coupon per item.
  • Store Coupons are basically like a Sale Price at the store and can only be used at one specific retailer.
  • Store Coupons typically have their own bar code system and do not look like a normal manufacturer bar-code.
  • Publix also takes competitor coupons.  Each individual Publix decides what they consider to be a competitor coupon, so check with your store to see which ones they take.  The store that I go to takes, Kroger, Target and Food Lion.
Where to Find Coupons:
There is an endless list of places where you can find coupons. Here is a list of my favorite and some of the most common places to look:
This should help you get started.  Next week we will discuss Coupon Values and When to Use Your Coupons.  Until then, happy couponing!

Publix Shopping Trip: 1/19/2011

I had an awesome quick trip to Publix tonight, and I really want to share it with you... especially all the mommas!
My grand total was $81.40, out of pocket I spent $22.21.  That means I had a total of $59.19 in Savings!!!  I was very pleased, especially since I stocked up on Baby Food... 40 jars of food and 2 containers of Formula.
As you will see, the formula ate up most of my money... which it always seems to do?!  But I save a ton by buying the smaller cans.  A breakdown: 2- 12.5 ounce cans of formula, with my coupons = $13.98, one 24 ounce can at retail = $22.49.  So by buying the smaller cans, but getting the same net amount of formula, I save $8.51!
I am going to post the list and coupon match-ups that I used, which came from Southern Savers.  This is an amazing website to use with couponing.  It is totally free and she tells you what the sales price is, which coupons to clip or print, and compiles a shopping list for you... AMAZING!  I could not save the kind of time and money that I do without it.

Getting Started

I am finally getting started! I have been trying to find time to sit down and get this blog up and running and I have finally found it!

Here is an idea of who I am and why I have decided to write a blog, or at least why I think people might care to hear what I have to say...

I am happily married to the love of my life, Matt.  We have been together now for almost eight years... which is roughly a third of our lives!  CRAZY, right?!  We started dating our Junior year of high school and all of college, got married and had a beautiful baby nearly seven months ago, Conner.  He is the light of my life.  I never truly understood a mother's love, but it is truly amazing!!!

LIFE  Finances can be tight with a new baby, so I have been trying to find creative ways to save money wherever possible.  I have recently delved into the couponing world to discover the amazing benefits that it can bring.  I have saved our family hundreds and hundreds of dollars doing this, and I want to share my experiences in hopes that it will help someone else!

LOVE I have a passion for many things, all of which I can never find time to do anymore since Conner has graced my life.  Now that Conner is becoming more independent, I am going to start and finish more projects: cooking, organizing, crafting, gardening, and sewing... to name a few!  I want to share all of these things with you, which will hopefully inspire you to be creative!

BEING A MOM  I love my child more than anything in the world... but there are days when I want to pull my hair out.  And on those days, I try to reach back in my brain and pull out those sweet moments, like when his face lights up when he sees me coming in the door or when he is drifting off to sleep and he caresses my face, just to make sure I am still there.  Those are the moments that I want to share: the good, the bad, and the ugly!  As a mom, it is always reassuring to hear someone else's story... it can make you feel less CRAZY!

So that is it... I want to share all of my experiences of Life, Love and Being a Mom!!!
